THE RETREAT HOME FOR CHILDREN HOLDS TOUR AND BLESSING — Hill Country Weekly

THE RETREAT HOME FOR CHILDREN HOLDS TOUR AND BLESSING — by Connie McFall Clark for Hill Country Weekly - freelance writer photographer editor boerne san antonio.jpg

The Retreat’s mission is to “show the love of Christ to each and every child and family to whom we serve and beyond. We do this by creating a culture where the needs of children, families and staff are seen and met in creative and innovative ways”.

A tour and blessing was held on November 1 at the location near Boerne. Music was provided by First Baptist Church Boerne’s David Burkett and the message for restoration and hope by First Baptist Church Boerne’s Pastor Mike Meadows. Brittany Thompson, CEO of The Retreat presented her vision and plans for the venue which will be open in February 2021. Thompson is purchasing the property and three buildings at the location. Renovation is in process for the upstairs residential building. Eventually the site will house 32 girls from ages 10 to 17.

Thompson, a special assault nurse examiner, provides assessments for children and adults. “I’ve taken care of several traffic victims and realized there is a gap in their care when they go to emergency shelters or foster care. They are not getting the therapeutic care they need.” The Retreat is a residential treatment center for child victims of human trafficking and exploitation.

“Survivors have experienced complex emotional, physical, and sexual trauma requiring specific treatment interventions. Survivors experience emotional, behavioral, and mental health symptoms that often go unidentified or misdiagnosed. Without proper support and treatment the risk for being re-victimized is high. Through The Retreat survivors receive treatment and support to address safety needs, gain understanding of the victimization they have experienced, improve self-esteem, develop motivation for change, improve life skills, and empower them to reach future goals.”

In attendance at the open house were board members, future staff, city officials, police departments and child protective services. All groups are collaborating to sponsor and seek donors for this vital and much-needed facility. Go to www.retreat4kids.com for more information.
